India’s poultry industry has continued to be a significant contributor to food security, employment, and economic growth. As one of the fastest-growing sectors in the agricultural economy, we have witnessed remarkable advancements driven by technology, private sector investments, and evolving consumer preferences. I am pleased to share the highlights of our activities and engagements over the past month, reinforcing IPEMA’s commitment to shaping the future of the poultry sector.
Current Status of the Poultry Sector
With India ranking as the third-largest producer of eggs and the fourth-largest producer of broiler chicken, our sector has experienced steady growth of 7-8% over the past three decades. Home to around 25,000 layer farmers and nearly one million broiler farmers, we have contributed approximately ₹1.35 lakh crore to the national GDP. Annually, India produces five million metric tonnes of broiler meat and 118 billion eggs, while also providing employment to over six million people. These statistics underscore the immense potential of our industry and its critical role in the country’s economy.
Factors Driving Growth
Several factors have continued to drive our sector’s expansion:
• Urbanization and Changing Diets: A growing preference for protein-rich diets has fuelled demand for poultry products.
• Technological Advancements: Scientific farming practices, automation, and improved breeding techniques have enhanced efficiency.
• Government Support: Initiatives such as the National Livestock Mission (NLM) and financial incentives have provided a strong foundation for growth.
• Growing Investments: Large-scale investments in feed production, cold storage, and integrated farming have boosted productivity.
• Rise of Contract Farming: This model has provided small farmers with essential resources, ensuring stable income and risk reduction.
Challenges Hindering Growth
Despite our progress, we have continued to face challenges such as:
1. Rising Feed Costs: With feed accounting for up to 70% of production costs, government intervention is needed to stabilize prices.
2. Policy and Licensing Hurdles: The lack of industry status has limited our access to subsidies, making regulatory streamlining essential.
3. Market Misconceptions: We must address myths about steroid use and pollution that impact consumer confidence.
4. Disease Outbreaks: Strengthening vaccination programs and biosecurity measures has been crucial for mitigating outbreaks.
5. Infrastructure Gaps: Cold storage and logistics investments have been essential to reduce post-production losses.
IPEMA’s Active Role in Industry Growth
Networking has remained at the heart of our industry’s success, and IPEMA has been instrumental in bringing the sector together. Our flagship event, the Poultry India Expo, has grown into South Asia’s largest poultry industry platform, fostering collaboration and innovation. Through our ‘Knowledge Day’ seminars and strategic alliances, we have continued to drive progress by introducing global advancements to Indian poultry farming.
Event Highlights
11th Kolkata International Poultry Fair 2025
(February 11-14)
IPEMA actively participated in this prestigious event from February 11-14 at the Biswa Bangla Exhibition Center. Organized by the West Bengal Poultry Federation and the Government of West Bengal, this fair served as a vital platform for innovation and collaboration in Eastern India’s poultry sector. Our members showcased cutting-edge equipment, while the Young Entrepreneurs of Poultry (YEP!) highlighted innovations for the industry’s future.

Conference on Livestock and Poultry Development in North East India
(February 27-28)

On February 27-28, IPEMA participated in this crucial event at the State Convention Centre, Shillong, organized by the North Eastern Council, Ministry of DoNER. I was honored to be a speaker at the plenary session on February 28, where I addressed key trends and challenges in poultry development. This aligned with our mission to promote sustainable farming, modern technology, and industry growth in Northeast India.
World Protein Day - (February 27, 2025)
To mark World Protein Day, IPEMA and Poultry India highlighted the significance of protein-rich diets through eggs and chicken. With 73% of Indians facing protein deficiency, we stressed the need for increased protein consumption. Renowned nutritionist Ms. Pooja Makhija recommended incorporating 5-6 eggs per week and adding chicken to daily meals to combat malnutrition. Our efforts were widely recognized, and we reaffirmed the role of poultry in providing affordable, safe, and essential nutrients.

IPEMA proudly participated in this event on February 27-28 at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research, Puducherry. Themed "Wings of Innovations: Flock Forward for Future Poultry Production," the conference brought together leading experts to discuss advancements in breeding, nutrition, and disease management. As a panelist, I shared insights on industry growth and innovation. This conference reinforced our commitment to technological advancements in poultry farming, and I extend my congratulations to Dr. Jeetendra Verma and the WVPA India team for organizing such a transformative event.

Scheduled for November 26–28, 2025, at HITEX, Hyderabad, the upcoming Poultry India Expo promises to elevate the sector’s global presence.

• Technology Integration: Leveraging Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial intelligence (AI), and precision feeding systems.
• Value-Added Products: Enhancing revenue through processed and ready-to-eat poultry products.
• Government Support: Strengthening policies for rural farming and infrastructure development.
• Eggs in Mid-Day Meals: Advocating for daily egg inclusion in mid-day meal schemes to boost child nutrition.
