Eggs: A Powerhouse of Nutrition and a Booming Business in India

Eggs are not just beneficial for health but also offer great business opportunities. Millions of people earn their livelihood by selling eggs and egg-based products. Eggs are considered one of the most affordable and high-quality sources of protein. This is why the National Egg Coordination Committee encourages people to include eggs in their daily diet. Their popular slogan — "Sunday ho ya Monday, roz khao ande" (Whether it's Sunday or Monday, eat eggs every day) — highlights this push. Nutrition experts also recommend including eggs in one’s regular diet, advising that a person should consume around 180 eggs annually.

Eggs are considered essential for the body as they provide necessary proteins, minerals, carbohydrates, and other nutrients. In states like Bihar, eggs are served in children's midday meals, which has also led to better pricing for egg traders.

Egg Production Has Increased in India

Experts point out that egg farming is a profitable business. Layer hens are raised specifically for egg production, which are then sold in the market, generating income for poultry farmers. As people become more health-conscious, the demand for poultry eggs is increasing. While only 35 million eggs were produced annually 25 years ago, India now produces around 1,400 billion (14,000 crore) eggs annually, according to the 2023–24 report. Currently, the per capita availability of eggs in the country is about 103 eggs per year — a decent figure. However, there are plans to raise this to 180 eggs per person annually to promote better health. An increase in demand will also benefit those involved in the egg business.

No Other Food Offers This Much Protein

Experts say that in a minimal and easy diet, no other food item provides as much protein as eggs. Moreover, eggs are convenient — they can be eaten on the go, whether on the metro or a bus. In fast-paced metro city life, egg-based snacks are easily available and widely enjoyed. With growing egg consumption, not only will public health improve, but the poultry industry will also flourish. This, in turn, can make a greater contribution to the country’s economy.

Health Benefits of Eggs

Boiled eggs are a rich source of iron, making them ideal for individuals suffering from anemia. Eggs strengthen muscles due to their high protein and amino acid content. They are also considered beneficial for memory, as they contain choline, which is known to boost brain function. Additionally, boiled eggs support eye health thanks to the antioxidant lutein present in them.
