Highlights of PFI’s 35th AGM: A Focus on Unity, Innovation, and Sustainability

The Poultry Federation of India (PFI) hosted its 35th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at The Leela Ambience Hotel, Gurgaon, on December 27-28, 2024. The event brought together over 800 delegates, including poultry farmers, breeders, feed manufacturers, equipment producers, government officials, and industry leaders. The AGM focused on fostering innovation, unity, and sustainability in the poultry industry.

PFI Leadership: Dedication to Progress
The AGM commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Ranpal Dhanda, President of PFI. He expressed gratitude to the attendees and emphasized PFI’s enduring commitment to supporting poultry farmers since its inception in 1988. Mr. Dhanda highlighted pressing industry concerns, including the escalating cost of maize, and assured attendees that PFI is actively collaborating with the government and farmers to boost maize production. Initiatives like the "Protein for All" campaign, aimed at increasing poultry product consumption and ensuring fair prices for farmers, were also discussed.

Key updates were shared through the Annual Report presented by Mr. Ravinder Singh Sandhu, Secretary of PFI. He detailed the Federation’s efforts to address challenges like soy doc quality, maize pricing, and bird flu-related losses. Notably, he announced the formation of state-level teams to tackle local issues and lauded government support for PFI’s initiatives.

Mr. Ricky Thaper, Treasurer, presented the financial accounts and acknowledged the contributions of founding members, sponsors, and industry professionals. In his new role as Joint Secretary, Mr. Thaper pledged to enhance collaboration with government bodies. Mr. Rahul Khatri was introduced as the newly appointed Treasurer, joining a leadership team committed to advancing the sector.

IPEMA's Contribution to Industry Growth
The AGM also featured contributions from the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (IPEMA). Mr. Uday Singh Bayas, President of IPEMA/Poultry India, emphasized the success of the Poultry India 2024 exhibition, which attracted over 40,000 visitors. He urged attendees to participate in the 2025 exhibition, describing it as a pivotal platform for the industry.

Former IPEMA President, Mr. Chakradhar Rao, underscored the importance of branding and value addition in poultry products. He encouraged industry players to enhance product quality and promote branded poultry products, which currently account for only 5% of the market. This strategy, he explained, would improve farm-gate prices and boost profitability.

Technical Sessions and Partnerships
Insightful technical sessions enriched the AGM. Notable presentations included:
•Mr. S.K. Malhotra (Interface Pharma): Innovations in immunotherapy for better poultry health and profitability.
•Dr. B.C. Dutta (Poultry Consultant): Importance of uniformity and grading in breeders for optimal productivity.
•Dr. Sushil Silva (USSEC): Role of U.S. soybeans in sustainable poultry production.

A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between PFI and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The partnership aims to advance sustainability through the development of algae-based poultry feed, paving the way for omega-3-enriched eggs and environmentally friendly practices. Mr. Vijay Sardana, PFI’s Legal Advisor, praised TERI’s contributions to sustainability.

Addressing Industry Challenges
Mr. Ranpal Dhanda outlined a strategic approach to tackle rising maize prices. He proposed:
1.Short-term Measures: Open procurement policies for maize and permitting GM maize imports to address immediate shortages.
2.Long-term Strategies: Increasing domestic maize production through advanced seed varieties and enhanced per-hectare yields.

Mr. Dhanda also advocated for cold storage facilities to stabilize egg and chicken prices during periods of low demand and called for the establishment of a Poultry Development Board.

Government Support and Future Initiatives
The Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri (Prof.) S.P. Singh Baghel, graced the event. He acknowledged the industry’s concerns and assured attendees of cross-ministry collaboration to address maize shortages and ethanol-related challenges. The Minister emphasized increasing poultry consumption through public awareness campaigns and dispelling myths about eggs and chicken.

Dr. Pankaj Shukla invited the Minister to launch PFI’s State Coordination Committee and unveil two publications: "Eat Right for Healthy India" and "Frequently Asked Questions" by the Poultry Farmers' Regulatory Committee. The Minister’s keynote address reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the poultry sector.

Closing and Appreciation
The AGM concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Ricky Thaper, who expressed appreciation for the sponsors, guests, and participants. The event’s success was attributed to the tireless efforts of the PFI Executive Committee and staff. Delegates enjoyed a closing evening of networking, music, and camaraderie.

The 35th AGM of PFI highlighted the industry’s collective vision for a sustainable future. Through its partnerships and initiatives, PFI continues to champion the welfare of poultry farmers and the growth of the sector.
