Poultry Policy aims to make Odisha self-sufficient in chicken, egg.

Bhubaneswar: The State Government has adopted a Poultry Policy to make the State self-sufficient in chicken and egg production in coming years.

This is what Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister Pradeep Maharathy vociferously said in the Assembly while replying to a host of questions relating to poultry and layer hen farming in the State.

“Unemployed youths are being provided land on lease and subsidies for construction of poultry farms. Besides, power subsidy and baby chickens and poultry feeds are being provided at affordable prices to farmers,” the Minister said while replying to questions of BJD MLAs, including Ranendra Prasap Swain.
However, the Minister admitted that Odisha is presently depending on other States to meet its daily need of eggs. “On the basis of 2011 Census, 2,09,50,000 people out of total 4,19,50,000 population eat eggs. When each person consumes 180 eggs per year, only 55 eggs are available in the State,” the Minister said.

He said Tehsildars have been asked to provide reserved Anabadi land on lease for establishment of poultry and layer farms.

Stating that three Opolfed counters selling chicken in the capital city are making profits, Maharathy said more number of such counters would be opened in other cities soon. He said online booking system for purchase of chicken would be introduced soon.

He urged upon poultry and layer growers to set up reproduction and poultry food processing centres at their farm sites.
