The Consumption Gap Opportunity

Despite this impressive scale, India's per-capita chicken consumption remains only around 5.1 kg per year — far below the global average of 17.5 kg. This wide consumption gap highlights a major opportunity for the Indian poultry sector.

Industry estimates suggest that even a modest increase of just 1 kg in per-person chicken consumption could create an additional demand of nearly 1.43 million tonnes annually.

04

A Strong Production Foundation

The sector today stands on a strong production foundation, supported by major poultry hubs across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and West Bengal. The Coimbatore–Palladam–Dharapuram corridor in Tamil Nadu has become a prominent poultry processing cluster, while western Maharashtra and the Andhra–Telangana belt continue to drive large-scale integrated and contract farming operations.

India's poultry industry has grown rapidly due to its affordability and efficiency. Compared to red meat, broiler chicken offers a cost-effective and scalable protein source for the growing middle-income population. Investments in hatcheries, feed mills, processing plants, veterinary services, and cold-chain infrastructure have further strengthened the ecosystem.

05

Stimulating Future Growth

However, future growth will depend not only on production expansion but also on stimulating consumption. Industry experts emphasize the need for wider awareness about poultry nutrition, better cold-chain distribution, affordable retail pricing, and greater access to value-added chicken products in underserved regions.

With continued policy support, infrastructure development, and nutrition awareness initiatives, India's poultry sector is well-positioned to bridge the consumption gap and unlock enormous domestic growth potential in the years ahead.
