HERO BANNER
Overview
In the wake of increasing global geopolitical uncertainties and supply-chain disruptions, Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly emphasized the importance of self-reliance, resilient domestic manufacturing, and reducing dependency on imports. Aligning with this national vision, the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) believes that strengthening India's poultry equipment manufacturing ecosystem is both economically and strategically important.
Reinvesting in the Poultry Ecosystem
As the representative body of over 55 leading Indian poultry equipment manufacturing companies — predominantly from the MSME sector — IPEMA continues to work towards the growth, modernization, and global advancement of the Indian poultry industry. Through its flagship platform, Poultry India Expo, along with year-round technical seminars, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and industry interactions involving academia, researchers, poultry professionals, and farmers, IPEMA consistently reinvests its resources into strengthening the poultry ecosystem in India.
A Globally Significant Poultry Nation
India today stands as the world's second-largest egg producer and among the leading poultry-producing nations globally. The poultry sector contributes over ₹1.35 lakh crore to the Indian economy and continues to witness consistent annual growth. Indian poultry equipment manufacturers have developed strong indigenous capabilities and are playing a crucial role in employment generation, rural development, technological advancement, and national food security.
The Pressure of Underpriced Imports
However, despite the sector's growing contribution, domestic poultry equipment manufacturers are increasingly facing severe pricing pressure and unfair competition from imported poultry equipment entering India at significantly underpriced rates. In many cases, imported products are also found to be low-quality or substandard — creating serious challenges for Indian manufacturers who adhere to higher standards of manufacturing quality, taxation compliance, workforce welfare, and after-sales support.
At present, import duties on poultry equipment remain relatively low compared to several other strategic manufacturing sectors. India has already adopted strong protective and regulatory frameworks in industries such as automobiles through DGFT and CMVR regulations, helping support domestic manufacturing ecosystems. Similar strategic consideration and policy support are now essential for the Indian poultry equipment manufacturing sector as well.
Key Recommendations
In this context, IPEMA–Poultry India, on behalf of the Indian poultry equipment manufacturing fraternity and the broader poultry ecosystem, respectfully appeals to the Government of India to consider practical and balanced policy measures that can help create a fair and level playing field for domestic manufacturers:
- Reviewing and strengthening the import duty structure for poultry equipment under HSN 84362900 to support domestic manufacturing competitiveness.
- Ensuring stricter quality and compliance checks on imported poultry machinery to prevent the entry of substandard products into the Indian market.
- Encouraging preference for "Make in India" poultry equipment in subsidy schemes, institutional procurement, and government-supported projects.
- Supporting MSME poultry equipment manufacturers through technology upgradation incentives, easier financing, and export promotion assistance.
- Initiating appropriate monitoring mechanisms against under-invoicing and unfair pricing practices in imported equipment.
Towards Atmanirbhar Bharat
Such measures will not only strengthen the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat but also help generate employment, reduce import dependency, enhance rural economic development, and position India as a global manufacturing hub for poultry equipment. IPEMA–Poultry India remains committed to working closely with the Government, industry stakeholders, and the poultry fraternity towards building a stronger, self-reliant, and globally competitive Indian poultry ecosystem in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
