With a growth of almost 8 per cent per annum, India is among the leading countries of modern poultry development, Mr. Eknath B. Chakurkar, Director, ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (CCARI) said here on Thursday.

Bird Welfare on Par with the West

The poultry industry is thinking about welfare of the birds to ensure hygienic food-concepts on par with the industry in the Western world, Dr. Sanjay Gavkare, General Manager (Technical) of Pune-based Venkateshwara Hatcheries said.

AAHP Convention & National Symposium

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the third Association of Avian Health Professionals (AAHP) convention and national symposium on "Poultry Health and Welfare" on Thursday, both Mr. Chakurkar and Dr. Gavkare said that even though nearly 22 per cent of the country's poultry industry is still disorganised, it has reached a level-playing field with advanced countries in terms of nutrition and health of birds.

On Bird Flu — "Hype Blown Out of Proportion"

To a question about bird flu, Dr. Gavkare replied saying it is a hype that is often blown out of proportion. The government has taken all the precautions to help the industry; like the temporary ban on birds from Karnataka by the Goa government, Dr. Gavkare said.
